Boldt Castle
Boldt Castle sits on an island in the St. Lawrence River, and the Thousand Islands Bridge Authority sells admission itself: $14 for an adult, or $17 combined with the Boldt Yacht House. What no listing tells you plainly is that the boat is a separate ticket on top, and that the castle is an official US port of entry — so arriving from the Canadian side means clearing customs on Heart Island, at a booth that closes an hour before the castle does. This guide sets out every route and what each one actually costs.

How a Visit Works
One island, two tickets, and a border. The order you buy things in decides both what you pay and whether you get on.
Decide Which Side of the River You Start From
Heart Island is in United States waters off Alexandria Bay, New York. From the American side the trip is short and cheap: a ten-minute shuttle from Alexandria Bay. From the Canadian side — Gananoque, Rockport, Ivy Lea, Kingston — it is a scenic cruise of one to five hours, and it is also an international crossing. Which side you start from changes the cost, the time, and the paperwork more than anything else.
Buy the Boat and the Admission Separately
This is the part that catches people out. The boat fare gets you to the island; it does not include entry to the castle. Uncle Sam Boat Tours' Alexandria Bay shuttle was last published at $10.00 adult and $6.50 child, and states plainly that castle admission is sold separately. Admission itself is $14.00 for an adult, $10.00 for a child aged 5–12, and free under 5. So the realistic all-in figure from the American side is about $24 an adult, not $14.
If You Come From Canada, You Are Entering the United States
Boldt Castle is an official US port of entry. Arriving from the Canadian side you clear customs on Heart Island itself, and the Bridge Authority states that passengers arriving from Canada must provide proper identification. The border booth operates 10:30 am to 5:30 pm — an hour earlier than the castle's own 6:30 pm closing — so a late-afternoon crossing from Canada can fail even while the castle is still open.
Leave Time for the Yacht House
The Boldt Yacht House is not on Heart Island — it is across the water on Wellesley Island, and a free shuttle boat runs between the two. It is a separate $8.50 admission on its own, or $17.00 combined with the castle, which saves an adult $5.50 against buying both. It holds the Boldt fleet's slips at 128 feet long and is on the National Register of Historic Places. Most visitors who skip it do so because nobody told them the crossing was free.

What a Visit Actually Costs
Admission is cheap and sold direct. The boat is a second ticket nobody mentions, and from the Canadian side there is a border in the middle of the trip. Get those three things straight and the whole visit becomes simple.
Boldt Castle is on Heart Island, in the St. Lawrence River off Alexandria Bay, New York. The Thousand Islands Bridge Authority has owned and run it since 1977, when it acquired the island for one dollar on the condition that revenue went back into restoration — which is why admission is unusually cheap for a landmark of its size, and why the Authority sells it directly.
The two tickets
Almost every complaint about a Boldt Castle visit traces to one misunderstanding: the boat and the admission are separate purchases.
| Ticket | Adult | Child 5–12 |
|---|---|---|
| Castle admission | $14.00 | $10.00 |
| Yacht House admission | $8.50 | $6.00 |
| Both, combination | $17.00 | $10.00 |
| Alexandria Bay shuttle (boat) | ~$10.00 | ~$6.50 |
Children 4 and under are free everywhere. The combination ticket saves an adult $5.50 against buying the two separately. Shuttle fares are the most recent published figures from Uncle Sam Boat Tours and are quoted here as approximate; the operator states explicitly that castle admission is sold separately.
So from the American side, a realistic adult total is about $24 for the castle, or $27 including the Yacht House.
Buy admission from the Authority
If you are going to the island anyway, the cheapest and simplest route is to buy admission from the people who run it: the Thousand Islands Bridge Authority’s own visitor page. There is no platform mark-up to avoid, because there is barely any mark-up to begin with — a pre-bookable entry ticket for the castle and Yacht House sells at $17.00, the same as the Authority’s own combination price.
The border is the real complication
Heart Island is United States soil, and Boldt Castle is an official US port of entry. Arriving from the Canadian side, you clear customs on the island. Two consequences that are easy to miss:
- You need proper identification — the Authority says so plainly, and US Customs and Border Protection sets what counts. Check CBP’s traveller guidance before relying on a driver’s licence.
- The port of entry runs 10:30 am – 5:30 pm. The castle is open until 6:30 pm. A crossing that leaves Canada at five o’clock can arrive to a closed border desk at an open castle.
Coming from the Canadian side
From Gananoque, Rockport, Ivy Lea or Kingston the crossing is a cruise rather than a shuttle, and the cruise is where the money goes:
- Gananoque: 1000 Islands Cruise with optional Boldt Castle entry — 4.5/5 from 4,621 verified travellers, from about $30. The most-reviewed way onto the island from Canada. Note the wording: castle entry is an option on this cruise, not a default.
- From Ivy Lea: 1000 Islands Boldt Castle Scenic Cruise — 4.6/5 from 1,434, from about $30.
- From Ivy Lea: Two Castle Scenic Cruise — adds Singer Castle downriver. 4.6/5 from 146.
For a wider view of the Canadian-side departures and how the towns compare, gananoque1000islandscruise.com covers that stretch of the river in more depth, and 1000islandshelicoptertour.com covers the aerial route over the island.
Why it is unfinished
George C. Boldt, proprietor of the Waldorf-Astoria, began the castle in 1900 as a gift for his wife Louise — six storeys, 120 rooms, 300 workers on the island. In January 1904 Louise died suddenly, and Boldt telegraphed the island to stop all construction. He never returned. The building stood open to the weather for seventy-three years until the Bridge Authority took it on. Parts remain deliberately unfinished, which is much of the point of going.
When to go
The season runs May 9 to October 12, daily 10:30 am – 6:30 pm. The admissions booth closes an hour before the castle does, so arriving after 5:30 pm means paying for very little. Independence Day weekend runs later, to 7:30 pm on July 3rd and 4th.

What Visitors Say
"having done this cruise previously it was worth doing again with the grandkids"

"I took my sister on this cruise for her birthday and we all really enjoyed it. The narration was very good and the cruise itself being on the water on a beautiful day was wonderful."
"beautiful cruise, informative, staff was friendly and helpful."
"I definitely recommend this activity and that with Bold Castle. But we were lucky because we went in May when it is obviously not the peak of the season because we did not wait at the American border. So everything went smoothly. I suggest if you can count on doing this activity when it is not really the season. The nature you see during the trip is enchanting."

Boldt Castle — Common Visitor Questions
Practical answers, starting with what it costs and how you get there.
Admission is $14.00 for an adult, $10.00 for a child aged 5–12, and free for children 4 and under. The Boldt Yacht House is a separate $8.50 adult, or you can buy a combination ticket for both at $17.00 adult / $10.00 child, which saves an adult $5.50. What those figures do not include is the boat: Heart Island is only reachable by water, and the fare is a separate purchase. Budget roughly $24 an adult all-in from Alexandria Bay, or about $27 with the Yacht House.
No, and this is the single most common surprise. The Alexandria Bay shuttle run by Uncle Sam Boat Tours states plainly that Boldt Castle admission is sold separately; its own fare was last published at about $10.00 adult and $6.50 child for the ten-minute crossing. Cruises from the Canadian side work the same way — several sell castle entry as an option rather than including it. Always read whether a boat ticket says entry is included.
Boldt Castle is an official US port of entry, so arriving from the Canadian side means formally entering the United States and providing proper identification. The Bridge Authority says so directly. What counts as acceptable identification is set by US Customs and Border Protection, not by the castle or the boat operator, so check CBP's current traveller guidance rather than relying on what a ticket seller tells you. The border desk on the island operates 10:30 am to 5:30 pm.
Only by boat — there is no bridge or causeway to Heart Island. From the American side, a shuttle runs from Alexandria Bay and takes about ten minutes, departing roughly every half hour from 10:30 am. From the Canadian side — Gananoque, Rockport, Ivy Lea, Kingston — you take a scenic cruise, which takes between one and five hours depending on the route and doubles as the sightseeing. Some visitors also arrive on their own boat; the island has docking.
No. Uncle Sam Boat Tours states that Boldt Castle Shuttle tickets are only available at its ticket booth from 9:00 am and cannot be bought online or in advance. That is worth planning around on a summer weekend, because it means queueing on the day. It is also the clearest practical argument for a pre-booked cruise from the Canadian side, or a pre-booked entry ticket: those you can hold before you arrive.
The 2026 season runs May 9 to October 12, daily 10:30 am to 6:30 pm, with the admissions booth closing one hour before the castle. Independence Day weekend runs later — until 7:30 pm on Friday July 3rd and Saturday July 4th. The castle is closed outside the season entirely. If you are crossing from Canada, the binding constraint is not the castle's hours but the port of entry's, which shut at 5:30 pm.
It is a separate building on a separate island, and the shuttle boat between them is free — which is the part most visitors do not realise. The Yacht House stands on Wellesley Island, holds slips 128 feet long built for the Boldt fleet, and is on the National Register of Historic Places. Bought alone it is $8.50; bought with the castle it adds only $3.00 to a $14.00 ticket. If you have the time in your crossing, the combination ticket is the obvious buy.
George C. Boldt stopped construction in January 1904 when his wife Louise died, and never came back. He had begun in 1900, with 300 workers building a six-storey, 120-room castle on Heart Island as a gift to her. The telegram ordering work to stop ended it. The building was left open to the weather for seventy-three years until the Thousand Islands Bridge Authority acquired it in 1977 for one dollar, on the condition that revenue went into restoration. Some rooms are restored; others are deliberately left as they were found.
